Good Tidings We Bring to You and Your Kin...

So, December is now in full flow, and we are frantically ticking off our action lists so we can break up for Christmas with a clean slate.

Once we finish work, many of us will be visiting family and friends. But your festive spirit can be seriously dampened if you end up with back or neck pain. This month, we explore this in a little more detail.

You're looking forward to putting your feet up, visiting friends and family, and recharging your batteries. But your festive spirit will be seriously dampened if you end up with back or neck pain.

Let's look at what could happen...

You all get in the car and drive some distance to visit Auntie Jane. The roads are busy and you are all keen to just get there. This translates to being cooped up in the car for a long time without moving. And, remember, your spine likes to stretch.

When you get to Auntie Jane's, you sit on her sofa for several hours, and then have a long lunch. Then you spend more time on the sofa. At this point your spine has not been stretched at all, and is feeling very sorry for itself!

The good news is that it's soon the end of the day and your spine can have a rest. The bad news is that Auntie Jane hasn't got enough beds, so you offer to take the sofa or a blow up mattress on the floor. Don't be surprised if your back is not enthusiastic about getting up in the morning!

So, what should you do?

  • On long car journeys get out and stretch regularly. At the very least, when you stop for petrol. And encourage everybody else in the car to do the same.

  • During your visit get up regularly and move about. Change seats a few times, if you can.

  • After lunch encourage everybody to go for a walk.

  • If there are no beds available, there isn't much we can do to help here. But you'd be better off on the mattress rather than bent up on the sofa.

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas, and enjoy time with your family and friends.
