Christmas decorations - Backs and Joints - Blog.jpg

With December just around the corner, many of us will be turning our attention to the Christmas decorations, amongst other pressing things!

In my 26 years of practice, I always have an increase in patients who have hurt themselves, whilst battling with the decorations. This month, I'm sharing some tips to help you avoid this pain.

So, what can go wrong?

  1. Stretching awkwardly while searching for decorations, and then lifting boxes down badly from the loft

  2. Bending and overreaching when putting the decorations up

  3. Making the same mistakes when putting them all away again

Let's focus on the first two, and what you should do:

  • When getting decorations out of the loft, or other awkward spaces, like the back of the garage, wait for somebody else to help you, if possible

  • Get a companion to hold the bottom of the loft ladder, and be available to take things from you

  • If you're on your own, do several trips, rather than trying to carry too much at once

  • Pull things towards you to lift them, which makes it easier and lighter than lifting over other objects, or in cramped conditions

  • Slow down - it's not a race, and doing it at a measured pace is far less likely to end in tears

  • When putting up decorations don't be ambitious and overreach - use a step ladder

  • Move the ladder regularly - when you are stretching your back is at its weakest

  • Again, having somebody to hold the ladder and pass decorations, pins etc, makes life much easier

As before, if you have overdone it, have a warm bath or shower to ease the muscles.

We hope you have a safe and enjoyable time preparing for Christmas.
