Keep Walking...

Did you know that May is National Walking Month?

The original concept was conceived to encourage everybody to reduce time in their cars, and walk to work or school instead. Whilst that may not be possible at the moment, now, more than ever, most of us are appreciating the joys of walking.

Suddenly walking has become our "go to" activity - giving us our one outing a day. And it's as beneficial for our minds as it is our bodies.

How walking can help you

  • Walking at a reasonable pace and swinging your arms will raise your heart beat and keep your limbs flexible

  • Great for healthy bones - weight bearing exercise works well for decreasing the risk or progression of osteoporosis

  • Supports the maintenance of general spinal health and good muscle tone

  • Mental health - time to yourself, away from your home, which is important in the current situation. It also allows you the chance to see other people, while social distancing, even if you don't talk to them, it is known to have benefits for your mental well being.

  • Fresh air and Vitamin D - both important for your ongoing health and wellness

Build up your distance gradually, especially if you are not used to doing much walking. For maximum benefit, walk at least three to four times per week, for at least 30-40 minutes.
As we become more restless, and potentially less tolerant with isolation, walking is a good way to shake off some tension.
