Plantar Fasciitis

plantar fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a flat ligament connecting the heel bone to the toes, supporting the foot arch. Plantar Fasciitis occurs when there is damage to that ligament.

It is one of the most common causes of foot and heel pain. It usually presents as a sharp stabbing pain under the heel or arch of the foot; and is often at its worst first thing in the morning when getting out of bed.

Injury can occur when the band of tissue is strained, stretched or damaged by small tears, causing chronic inflammation resulting in plantar fasciitis.

There are many causes including walking, standing or running for long periods. Obesity, poorly fitting shoes, a tight Achilles tendon and feet that roll inward can also impact the ligament. Our tissues also become less elastic with age, which can lead to tiny tears in the ligament causing pain and inflammation.

There are several ways to treat the condition:

Rest to reduce tendon inflammation

  • Ice to decrease inflammation and pain

  • Stretching the muscles and tendons of the feet to loosen them and relieve pain - this helps to prevent further injury

  • Proper footwear to cushion the heel and support the foot. This is important to the healing process and helps reduce recurrences.

We can provide you with an accurate diagnosis, treatment and advice on how to self manage this painful condition.
